Internet Safety Tips

The internet is a new frontier, one with few regulations. You can find anything on the internet, which is a great thing most of the time. But sometimes there are things you don't want to find or people attempting to use the freedom of the internet to steal your personal information. Are you worried about visiting a bad site? Are you worried about what your children are looking at on the internet? Well here are some great tips to help protect your family.

You can also print out a safety agreement and have your family sign it. It is just one extra step that can help your family members commit to internet saftey.

Back to School Reading Tips from Marquis Woolford
Children’s World, Central Library and Getting Ahead Learning Center, 301 Tully St.

Encouraging our kids to read is critical to their happiness! Through reading, a kid’s world and future open up. Kids who come to the library will read non-stop when I help them find books and games connected to their interests.

Please visit me at the library Children’s World! I can help you and your children find books on EVERYTHING that interests your child or makes him or her excited. I can help you get a library card for yourself and your kids, and show you fun and useful things on our library website.

You can also visit me at the Getting Ahead Learning Center, 301 Tully St. The SHA van, driven by Barbara Hills, picks us up and takes us to the library every Tuesday at 3:15. Call 473-8455, for more information. I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Problem: Having trouble going to the site you want?

Tip:

Try switching from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox or from Mozilla Firefox to Internet Explorer. Sometimes websites work in one browser but not the other. Ask your computer center monitor for help if you need to.

Problem: Is one internet browswer better than another?

Tip:

Mozilla is our preferred browser. It is faster and less vulnerable to bad stuff that slows down the computer.

Problem: I don't want other people to see which sites I have visited after I leave. I want my privacy.

Tip:

For your safety, it is a good idea to erase your browsing history and delete cookies. In Mozilla Firefox you can do this in a single click. Just go to Tools → Clear Recent History.

Protect your computer!

Problem: The computer at our center sometimes gets viruses and doesn't work well. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Tip:

The computer center computers have Norton Antivirus that continuously scans for and fixes viruses. That is good, but the computers can still be infected by viruses that come through email attachments.

Tip:

Never double-click on an email attachment that contains an executable file ending with .exe, .com, or .vbs. Files like these can do serious damage to the computer whether you have antivirus protection or not. Attachments that end in .doc, .xls, or .gif won’t harm the computer.

Problem: My children don't like to read.

Tip:

"Have your children read the books that feature characters from their favorite cartoons, video games and toys! They will be more likely to enjoy reading if it's about the super heroes and tv stars they enjoy! There are Nickeldoen, Disney and Marvel chapter books, comic books and graphic novels that kids get excited about, because they reconize the characters and want to further the adventures!"
